Storm  –  listen[mp3]
This is an older song. I wrote it mid-summer, around the time Bonnie and Charley were abusing the Florida coast.

I tried something different with my voice (partially to compensate for having to sing through an SM58. I miss the V77 …) If you’ve ever seen my MP3 playlist, you know what I was going for.

(Note: There’s an updated, and vastly-improved, version of this track on Waking Up In August.)

STORY
Storms have so many great action words associated with them, this song mostly wrote itself. It’s not really about a storm, though. Like all good metaphors, it’s about a woman.
      —
The “you’re calm like the wind” simile has been with me for years. I’ve written and dumped half a dozen songs, trying to get it out of my head. (My last attempt was a Time&Whiskey effort that also included the line “I told my girlfriend: ‘if you’re a snake, you’re gonna regret it. I’ll find a way to do us both in.’” It’s a shame that one never made it out of Jan’s basement.) But I think I’ve exorcised the phrase with this attempt.
LYRICS
Look at the wreckage you’ve left in your wake.
Fallen down bodies you go for.
You tore the roof off our old secret place,
gustin’ in knocking things over

  When’s the storm blowing off?
When’s the night that you figure it out?
  All those guys are me.
  All those guys are me.

Just like the last one that starts with an ‘m’,
blowing me back 15 years.
I’m more cautious now, shuttered and safe,
and you’re out there taking it all on

  When’s the storm blowing off?
When’s the night that you figure it out?
  All those guys are me.
  All those guys are me.

I’m cold like the water.
You’re calm like the wind.
