When It Snowed  –  listen[mp3]

When I wrote this (for the “When It Snowed” Songfight,) I tried for the “deep cut, from side 2″ optional challenge. That is, I wanted to write a song with less of an obvious hook. I’m happy with the result, but I don’t think I succeeded. Probably, I dropped the electronic drums out too soon, and even though I like the way the song builds, it would sound more “B-side” if it didn’t kick up so much for the chorus.

Still, it is what it is.

STORY
A mostly made-up story about a guy who liked winter when he had someone to share it with, but after she left he sees the truth: winter is bleak, desolate, dead. Worst of all the seasons… The words aren’t about specific events, but there’s lots of me in the song. Which is to say, I can’t stand winter.
LYRICS
In our September age, forgotten summer light.
We used to brave the wind and shiver in the night.

All the shadows cast dance about this place.
I loved to watch the winter moon light up your face.

And when it snowed on the car back then,
we thought that time could be frozen still…

I’ve suffered through more long cold dark endless nights,
with all the gray things and the dead skies and goodbyes

We used to love the snow, December nights and days.
I’m the cost of all your bitter ways

You know I can’t stand the weather here,
it’s nothing like the old place.
You know I can’t stand the weather here.
A morning in your life is all I ask.

There’s no “we’ll get along,”
There’s no “we’ll get by.”
There’s only winter here and darkness in your eyes.

There’re no good songs
and nothing I can say.
I’m left with snow that falls and lies for days

You know I can’t stand the weather here,
it’s nothing like the old place.
You know I can’t stand the weather here.
A morning in your life is all I ask.
