When I wrote this (for the “When It Snowed” Songfight,) I tried for the “deep cut, from side 2″ optional challenge. That is, I wanted to write a song with less of an obvious hook. I’m happy with the result, but I don’t think I succeeded. Probably, I dropped the electronic drums out too soon, and even though I like the way the song builds, it would sound more “B-side” if it didn’t kick up so much for the chorus.

Matt Sharpe seems to be MIA, so I had Sarah sing the high parts.
(Obviously, this song is a tribute of sorts to Weezer. Though when I listen to it side-by-side with the Pinkteron tracks that inspired it, the resemblance isn’t as striking as I expected. Probably it’s the Matt Sharpe-less performance.)

Hope You’re Okay –

With new-found riches this weekend (thanks Brad), I visited Craig who put me right about the Fender Precision Bass: it’s great … for bass players. Guitar players like me need the thinner neck of a Standard Jazz Bass. Oh, and he just happened to have one, and just happened to knock an extra $50 off the tag.
In the end, my new bass didn’t make much difference in the recording, but it’s wicked fun to play.
(Written for the Hope You’re Okay Songfight. Note: this version of the track is significantly louder than the version on Songfight. I also thinned out the drum track significantly, brought up the acoustic guitar in the chorus, and adjusted the overall EQ so it doesn’t sound like so much ass.)

This was a rush-job to beat the Songfight deadline. Between flying back from Calgary and toasting the New Year, I had about 4 hours to write and record. Hence the recycled train beat, and hurried bass-heavy mix. I like the song, though it could stand some crunchier guitar and a better drum track.
